작가 나레쉬 쿠말의 작업은 이주, 이동성, 인류의 분쟁을 주제에 뿌리를 두고 있습니다. 그의 새로운 작업 <과거의 노래>에 포함 된 네 점의 그림은 2024년 광주 호랑가시나무창작소에서 입주작가로 거주하는 동안 제작되었습니다. 이 깊은 명상에 잠긴작품은 1980년 5월 18일, 5.18 민주화운동 이라는 광주 역사의 격동적이고 획기적인 순간에서 영감을 받았습니다.

그림 속에는 한국의 풍부한 산악 지형을 배경으로 깃발을 흔들거나 막대를 휘두르는 얼굴 없는 회색 빛 실루엣을 담겨 있습니다. 작가에게 이러한 인간상은 인류의 미래를 상징합니다. 그는 5.18 민주화운동의 역사를 자세히 설명하는 책의 페이지와 같은 상징적인 소재를 사용하여 자신의 예술을 표현하는데 사용했습니다. 다른 소재로는 수채 색연필, 인디고 안료, 운모(인도, 스리랑카 등에서 생산되는 천연광물) 가루, 종이, 포스트잇_플래그가 사용되었습니다. 그는 작품을 통해 권력과 억압, 자유와 정의, 기술과 인류간의 갈등 등 여러가지 우려사항을 관객들에게 되돌아보게 하는 동시에 지구 온난화의 심화 경험에 대해서도 이야기합니다.

나레쉬 쿠말은 또한 무역 정치를 탐구하는 <공화국의 행위>라는 퍼포먼스 작품을 가지고 있습니다. 이 작품에서 그는 자신의 몸에 커피를 묻힙니다. 커피는 한국 생활과 직장 문화에서 중요한 음료이며, 많은 다른 나라에서 한국으로 수입됩니다. 작가는 "저는 사물과 사람들이 한 장소에서 다른 장소로 어떻게 이동(태어난 곳에서 다른 나라로 이주) 하고, 다른 나라의 문화가 동화되어 그들의 삶에 큰 부분을 차지하는 지에 대해 관심이 있습니다."라고 말했습니다.

His practice addresses the social and economic landscape of our times through deeply personal and

performative

gestures, Inspired by the process of migration and the shifting identities and hopes it often

accompanies, his work

draws upon his own experience as a migrant first from Bihar to Delhi, and later to Paris and

Mumbai.

Naresh’s performances engage directly with these experiences, which he complements with poetic wash

and

watercolour drawings, as preliminary scripts or as residues of the event. Alongside performance and

drawings

Naresh works with highly symbolic materials and objects, chosen to create a sensorial translation

of his encounter

with various visual and cultural landscapes, and in connection with his roots in Bihar.

Whether the old papers he chooses for his drawings or the symbolic materials he engages with,

Naresh’s conceptual

explorations unravels in the dialogue he creates with the material traces of history. His

performative and

transformative manipulation of the mundane are at the same time reflections and enquiries into the

role of ritual

and philosophy in a world of information and technology. In Naresh’s work, mediums converse, with

each other and

with the artist, making his practice a constant progression and an organic part of his life.
