<흙벽 스코어>는 흙의 물질적, 생태적, 진화적, 재생적, 유기체적 특성을 탐구한다. 흙으로 조성된 벽은 달을 포함한 외계 환경에서 구조물을 세우기 위해 개발된 어스백 기법을 참조하여 구성하였다. 스코어는 선이 새겨진 자국을 통해 구축된 음악적 악보나 구성을 의미한다.

흙벽 조형물의 표면에는 삼베실을 만들기 위해 손질해 놓은 삼껍질들이 뒤엉켜 찍혀 있다. 삼껍질의 결은 삼베 제작에 노고를 들인 농부의 노동과 삶을 단절된 지식의 원천으로 재조명하며 수공업적 문화유산의 시각적 흔적을 형성한다. 이 흔적은 음향적으로 연결하는 그래픽 스코어로서 판소리의 서사 구조, 멜로디, 리듬이 소리꾼 박해라의 퍼포먼스와 청중과의 추임새를 통해 소리화된다. 이러한 접근은 역사적 맥락의 소리내기를 거쳐 동시대 사람들이 더 이상 소리 낼 수 없는 판소리의 굴곡진 음을 함께 내어 보고 현대인의 음성 표현을 재구성하는 시도이다. 또한 동시대 미술에서 ‘전통’이라는 틀 안에 있는 재료와 요소들에 주목하는 것이 어떤 의미를 갖는지 탐구한다.

이번 작업에서 흙은 이와 같은 상호작용과 변화하는 정체성을 재해석하는 매체이자 기억과 소리가 축적된 역사적 저장소, 발언화된 주체다. 흙의 이러한 주체성은 인류 역사에서 흙과 함께 이어져 온 건축적, 농업적, 예술적 실천을 드러내고 서구 중심의 현대화에 따른 단절, 혹은 착취에 대한 다원적 접근을 제시한다.

Earthwall Score explores the material, ecological, evolving, regenerative, and organismic dimensions of earth. The sculpture is made using the Earthbag technique, developed for extraterrestrial construction. Here, “score” refers to a musical notation created through the process of engraving lines.

The sculpture surface is imprinted with tangled hemp husks. These imprints reexamine the labor and lives of farmers as a source of fragmented knowledge, forming visual traces of fading artisanal traditions. These traces form a graphic score that sonifies the narrative structure, melody, rhythm, and audience-performer interactions of pansori as performed by Park Hae Ra. This work explores historical contexts of sound-making through condensed melodies, bending the notes of pansori that contemporary people can no longer vocalize, while attempting to recompose modernized vocal expressions. It examines what it means to refer to materials and elements framed as “traditional” in contemporary art.

In this work, earth is a medium for reinterpreting symbiosis and shifting identities, a repository of historical memory and sound—a voice with agency, reexamining the framework of West-centered and exploitative modernity.
